UISC 181D - Introduction to Ethnic Studies

Course Cross-listed with AFS 112D
3 credit(s) High Impact Practice: Diversity
This class gives students an opportunity to examine how concerns for social justice and belonging have shaped the field of Ethnic Studies. Topics to be considered can include: how colonization, slavery, imperialism, and white supremacy moved different groups to create and form Ethnic Studies programs/courses; how Ethnic Studies influences conversations about immigration, gender, identity, educational aspirations, and assimilation; how groups push for representation, validation, and belonging while acknowledging the limits of ‘being seen’ and carrying a double consciousness; how Ethnic Studies challenges power structures and what that can mean for academia. Counts as a “D” for Diversity class in UIS.
