UISC 185 - Introduction to Mythology and Literature

Course Cross-listed with ENG 144
3 credit(s)
This course introduces students to myths, folktales, and fairy tales from a variety of cultures, and examines how they have inspired or influenced later authors. Topics to be covered include oral vs. written traditions; the relationship between mythology, religion, and culture; and common types of myths such as creation myths, hero’s journeys, and trickster tales. We will also explore how certain stories, particularly Greek myths, have become so familiar in the modern world and how modern authors have reimagined myths and folktales in later poetry and fiction.
