Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. An undergraduate specialization in this liberal arts field is useful for students who plan careers in business, industry, education, health services, personnel work, or in any of the various fields involving human relations. To become a licensed psychologist, graduate training is necessary after completing the undergraduate major. All courses in the undergraduate curriculum will incorporate the most up to date American Psychological Association learning goals for the undergraduate psychology major. These goals include: (1) Knowledge Base in Psychology, (2) Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking, (3) Ethical and Social Responsibility in a Diverse World, (4) Communication, and (5) Professional Development. All course syllabi will indicate the APA goals that they address.

General Education Requirements (A&S)


In addition to major requirements, students must meet the General Education Requirements that correlate to their degree.

Major GPA and Grade Requirements


Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.25 in courses required to complete the major. All courses required for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

Complete three additional psychology courses. The courses may be completed from any of the Five Domains above or the courses below:

Note:


Only one experientially based course (PSY 384 , PSY 385 , PSY 484 , PSY 485 ) can be applied toward the major, although additional courses from this grouping can be counted as general electives toward graduation requirements.

Additional Information:


Transfer students must meet department core requirements for the major and must take a minimum of 15 credits above PSY 105  in the Department of Psychology at the University of Hartford.

PSY 132 PSY 245 , PSY 331 , PSY 332 , and PSY 333W  will not fulfill a requirement for the psychology major.

A 500-level course may be taken by seniors who have demonstrated superior performance in courses in the major, with written permission of the department chair.

All courses taken by declared majors to satisfy the major requirements must be taken for a letter grade and may not be taken on a Pass/No Pass basis, except Student Internship (PSY 384 , PSY 385 , PSY 484 , PSY 485 ).
