General Education Requirements (A&S)
In addition to major requirements, students must meet the General Education Requirements that correlate to their degree.
Major GPA and Grade Requirements
Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in courses required to complete the major. All courses required for the major must be taken for a letter grade.
Requirements
Thirty-six credits are required of all English majors. Literature Concentration (18 credits)
One course in language/professional writing/grammar
Five literature courses at the 300 or 400 level
A minimum of two of the five must be taken from the following pre-1900 literature courses:
- ENG 326 - Dante’s Divine Comedy 3 credit(s)
- ENG 340 - Myth, Legend, and Folklore 3 credit(s)
- ENG 343 - Medieval Literature in Translation 3 credit(s)
- ENG 360 - Chaucer 3 credit(s)
- ENG 361 - Shakespeare 3 credit(s)
- ENG 368 - The Development of Theatre 3 credit(s)
- Other courses may count when the content is sufficiently focused on pre-1900 literature. These include ENG 318D , ENG 322 , ENG 323 , ENG 328D , ENG 329 , ENG 349 , ENG 356D , ENG 357 , ENG 363 , ENG 370 , and ENG 379 .
Creative Writing Concentration (18 credits)
Students with a creative writing concentration are required to take
One course in language/professional writing/grammar
Four writing workshops from the following:
Elective
A literature elective to reach a total of at least 36 credits (12 courses) to complete the major.
