Program Requirement Notes


1 Students are encouraged to supplement their program of study by taking unrestricted electives from any of the colleges in the University.

2 Architecture Design + Technology major includes all ADT courses.

3 A grade of C or better is required to advance through the architectural design course sequence:

ADT 123 , ADT 233 , ADT 244 , ADT 352P , ADT 371 , and ADT 472  

4 Technical specialties for the standard program are 4-credit, upper-level courses in the major, and include 353 , 356 , 359 , 362 , 366 , 373 , 471 , 473 , and 481 .

Construction Management concentration in Architecture:  Required technical specialties are:

  • ADT 353  
  • two other upper-level courses in the major as listed above.

   Required professional electives are:

For AD+T students entering their senior year who wish to pursue the 48- credit M. Arch track 1 (Accelerated M.Arch), have a minimum GPA of 3.40, and have been accepted into the program, you must take the following 4 courses to satisfy the undergraduate (UG) and pre-requisite requirements for  the 48-credit M.Arch Track 1 :

  • ARC 513, 3 credits for required UG professional elective, 3 credits
  • ARC 515 4 credits for required UG technical specialty, 4 credits
  • ARC 511, 6 credits for required  ADT 489P - Senior Capstone Project , 4 credits
  • ARC 500 level course, 3 or 4 credits for 2nd required UG professional elective, 3 credits

5 The University Interdisciplinary Studies (UIS) requires 12 credits, one in each of the following categories:

  • UISA Artistic and Creative Expression
  • UISC Cultural and Historic Interpretation
  • UISS Social Context and Change
  • UIST Natural, Scientific, and Technological Exploration

Engineering students must take UISC 180 - A Western Heritage: The Humanities  or UISC 212D - Contemporary American Studies  and UISS 340D - Ethics in the Professions  for a letter grade.

Engineering technology students in architecture, audio, computer and electronic, or electromechanical majors must take UISS 340D - Ethics in the Professions  for a letter grade.

6 Lab science electives include any 4-credit science with a lab BIO, CH, PHY, SCI, or 4-credit UIST courses that include a lab (except UIST 150 )

7 Technology professional electives are courses that contribute to a student’s career goals and objectives, including courses in architecture, engineering technology, engineering, science, mathematics, business, computer science, technology, fine arts, music, and education. Courses from other areas may be taken if approved using a substitution/waiver form.

8 Engineering professional/acoustics electives include courses in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Generally, these electives should be at the 200-level or above. For mechanical engineering, electives should typically be ES, BE, CE, ECE, and ME at the 300-level or higher and must be approved by the advisor. For civil engineering, electives should be CE courses that are 300-level or higher and must be approved by the advisor.

9 Humanities electives normally include history, art history, music history, cinema, communications (other than applied courses), drama, English and English literature (NOT WRITING), foreign and modern languages, and philosophy. The social science electives are anthropology, economics, languages, politics and government, psychology, and sociology.

10 Includes all ES, BE, CE, ME, and ECE courses; and CS courses for the computer engineering degree.

11Professional electives for Civil Engineering Concentrations:

Environmental professional electives must be selected from the following list: CE 502, CE 503, CE 504, CE 509, CE 523, CE 524, CE 525, CE 550, CE 591, CH 519, CH 539

Construction Concentration professional electives must be selected from the following list:  CE 340 - Construction Management  CE 442 - Construction Planning and Scheduling  MGT 310 - Management and Organizational Behavior  (PE f/ Constr. Conc. only)

12 Senior design project must be an environmental engineering-related subject.

13 ECE electives include ECE 234  (electrical only, required for computer) or any 300-, 400-, or 500-level ECE course.

Electrical engineering sequences provide greater depth and understanding of a field or specialty.

Typical sequences are given below.  Other sequences may be approved by the chair.  Dual-listed courses cannot be counted together as a sequence.

 14 Computer science electives include CS 275  and any 300- or 400-level CS courses with the exception of cooperative education, studies in computer science, and independent study in computer science.

 15 For the Electronic engineering technology major all ECT 300-400 level courses are included. 

  • For the Electromechanical engineering technology major, ECT 300-400 level, MET 300-400 level courses are included.

16 Technical specialties are ECT 300- or 400-level courses in the major, including ET 380  and ET 480 .

  • Acceptable technical specialties for the electromechanical major also include MET 300- or 400-level courses.
  • For the Electromechanical engineering technology major, ECT 300-400 level, MET 300-400 level courses are included.

17 Computer and Electronic engineering technology major includes CS, ES, ECT, HDMI courses.

18 Technical specialties are upper-level courses in the major. Acceptable specialties are CS 320 , 330 , 331 , 340 , 351 , 355 , CS 368 460W , 365 , 371 , 375 , 451 , ET 380 , 480 , ECT 300- or 400-level courses. 

19 Audio ET major includes AUD, COM, ECT, ES, MET, MPT, and TH courses.

20 Technical specialties are upper-level CETA and Hartt School courses in the major. Acceptable specialties are AUD 462 COM 462 , 463 , 466 , CS 220P , 320 , 330 , 331 , 340 , 351 , 355 , 460W , 365 , 371 , 375 , 451 , ECT 232 , 242 , ECT 300- or 400-level courses; MET 300- or 400-level courses; TH 210 , 211W , 330 , 333 , 410 , 420 , 421 , 422 , 435 , 455 .  Professional electives for Audio Engineering Technology are ECT 232 , ECT 242 , ECT 300- or 400-level; ET 180 , 280 , 300 , 380 , 400 , 480 ; MET 236 , 243 , MET 300- or 400 -level; MTH 352 ; or any course with the following codes: AC, AFR, BAR, BIO, BL, CH, EC, ENT, FIN, INS, MEW, MGT, MIS, MKT, MUM, PHY, QNT, SCI.

Additional select courses may be take in the following course codes: CIN, CMM, COM, DRA, HLM, MDA, MPT, TH, VDO.  (Please see CETA 100 on Blackboard for a list of which select courses are acceptable.)

21 Six optional credits in recording studio techniques.

22 Mechanical ET major includes ECT, ES, ME, and MET courses.

23 Technical specialties are upper-level courses in the major.

24 First area of specialization electives must be any 200-level or above engineering course (BE, CE, ECE, ES, ME).

25 Second area of specialization electives must be courses at the 200-level or above in engineering or related majors as outlined in approved program of study.

26 Acceptable courses in the energy engineering and sustainable design concentration (Only one non-ME course from the following list is acceptable toward the concentration):

29 Acceptable professional electives in the computational concentration: CS 368 CS 368 - Data Mining ME 408 /507, Finite Element Analysis, ME/ECE 437/537/537, Multidisciplinary Modeling, ME 438, Multidisciplinary Modeling II (or ME 538),  ME 455 - Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)  (or ME 555)

32 One 3-credit Math/Basic Science elective can be:

  • Math (M code) course 200-level or higher that is not already required,
  • Physics (PHY code) course that is not already required, including PHY 130   or higher, excluding PHY 214P  ,
  • Biology (BIO code) including BIO 110   or higher,
  • Chemistry (CH code) course not already required, including CH 111P  or higher; BSRE (Robotics Engineering) ONLY–CH 110P or higher
  • Or any transfer credit which fit the above descriptions.
