General Education Requirements (A&S)
In addition to major requirements, students must meet the General Education Requirements that correlate to their degree.
Major GPA and Grade Requirements
Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in courses required to complete the major. All courses required for the major must be taken for a letter grade. English Major Requirements (36 credits)
Each student should plan his or her program of study in consultation with the Secondary English advisor.
Two historical surveys of literature, one from each of the following lists:
One Course in Grammar or History of the Language
Two literature courses at the 300 or 400 level
At least one must be taken from the following pre-1800 literature courses:
One Cultural Diversity Course
Adolescent Literature Course
Electives
Literature electives to reach a total of at least 36 credits (12 courses) to complete the major.
Note(s):
A single course may be used to satisfy, two-but not three-distribution areas; for example, a course on modern British poetry might satisfy the poetry requirement and count in the 20th and 21st centuries category.
Depending on their content, Studies in…, Special Topics, and honors courses may be used to fulfill distribution requirements. Consult the department chair.

Secondary English majors must follow NCTE-suggested course areas, including courses concentrating on the works of women writers and writers of color, courses on film, and courses on poetry.
*Another UISA course in combination with a CIN course may also be taken to meet this requirement.
