SCL 325 - Intellectual Aesthetics

3 credit(s)
This course introduces visual culture and critical study of contemporary art practices, with the aim of building skills in intellectual dialogue and creating a foundation for deeper philosophical investigation in the future. Students study the stream of thought behind the evolution of art from the 20th century to the present. By reading a wide range of authors and essays that address the roots of artistic movements and cultural phenomenon, we explore the way both established and emerging artists produce art. This course is not media specific, and it embraces experimental approaches to making art as a reflection of one’s own nascent practice. This course is open to any student, regardless of major, who is interested in intellectually engaging with aesthetic practice.
Prerequisite(s): Junior or senior standing.
