Special Education, M.Ed.

The mission of the online Masters in Special Education is to enhance the ability of highly qualified educators to be leaders in implementing effective teaching and learning environments for individuals with disabilities in their schools and communities.

The Master of Education in Special Education program is grounded in the commitment of the University of Hartford to prepare professionals who are highly competent in their academic disciplines and instructional skills. In keeping with its overall mission, the program will serve to provide and expand educational opportunities for individuals, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and economic background.

Required credits: 30 (Standard Program)


The proposed program of study is comprised of a cohesive framework of courses that are well grounded in important theoretical studies; a progressive sequence of field-based/experiential learning opportunities to allow for the application of such theoretical models in the school environment; and an integrated research requirement that serves the program’s capstone experiences.

Additional Information


Students who don’t have a background in education or those who have not taken an introductory class in special education will be required to take EDH 510 - Theoretical Foundations: Children and Adults with Special Needs .

Practicum Experiences


Students who are on DSAP are required to complete one practicum experience (3 credits). Students who do not have a DSAP are required to complete two practicum experiences (6 credits).
