  • AFR 150 - Vocal Technique

    An invigorating vocal workout class for singers: This weekly course provides students with a progressive series of vocal exercises to condition, develop and strengthen their voices. Aspects of vocal production will be practiced including: body alignment, breath management, support, range, balancing vocal registers, vowel formation, tone quality, resonance, intonation, flexibility, coordination, vocal health and maintenance. This course will provide invaluable tools for both beginning and advanced singers who wish to improve their overall vocal technique and maintain their vocal health. One hour weekly.

    This is a course on the basic elements of the Jazz language. Facility with the following elements will be developed through in-class writing drills and assignments: modal and symmetrical scales, seventh chord structures, upper partials, chord symbols, the Roman Numeral system and standard harmonic progressions.

  • AFR 225 - Jazz Theory II

    This is a course on the study of voicing styles, which include three-part accompaniment and four-part block chord style. Standard songs are analyzed as models of melodic and harmonic form, as well as for the study of reharmonization. Facility with these elements will be developed through in-class drills and writing assignments. Two hours weekly.

    The American art form known as jazz has a rich history, well chronicled in audio and video performances. This course explores the history through the careers of jazz luminaries starting from the 1920s to 1949 who have influenced generations of jazz musicians. Also examined is the development of jazz styles and sub-genres and American social and cultural influences. Class lectures include audio, video and live jazz performances including discussion on the history and legacy of this unique American art form.

Through this course, an in depth musical and historical aspect will be discussed concerning individuals from the early 1920s to 1954 including Louis Armstrong, Colman Hawkins, Art Tatum, Lester Young, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. These musicians and their unique styles are explored through audio and video recordings. Class lectures provide an understanding for students toward writing a final exam essay of the jazz artist of their choosing.

  • AFR 310 - Jazz Analysis: Individuals and Perspectives II


    3 credit(s)
    The American art form know as jazz has had many musical and cultural icons ranging from 1955 to the present day. Through this course, an in depth musical and historical aspect will be discussed concerning individuals including Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus and Steve Coleman. These musicians and their unique styles are explored through audio and video recordings. Class lectures provide an understanding for students toward writing a final exam essay of the jazz artist of their choosing. (A two-semester sequence)

  • AFR 321 - Hard Bop Seminar


    3 credit(s)
    The American art form known as Jazz has a rich history which include several defining eras. This course will examine one such era, the Hard Bop period (mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s). Hard Bop Seminar looks to explore several key instrumentalists and vocalists who helped to define this era including Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Ahmad Jamal, Betty Carter, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Also examined will be the Hard Bop era and it’s influence on future jazz styles and it’s relevance to the American social climate of the 1960’s. Class lectures will include audio and video performances from the Hard Bop era with discussion concerning it’s birth and evolution.
    Prerequisite(s): AFR 300  and AFR 331 .

  • AFR 330 - Jazz Composition


    1 credit(s)
    The American art form known as Jazz has produced many dynamic and influential composers who transcend musical genres. Also, the American Broadway songbook and its composers have provided much in the way of compositions for the Jazz genre. This course will explore the compositional approaches of composers including Fats Waller, Billy Strayhorn, Kurt Weill and Hoagy Carmichael. Lectures will include audio and video examples for an analytical perspective on the composers and their individual harmonic tendencies. In addition, there will be discussion involving the process and technique of writing Jazz melody, including the 12 bar blues, the 32 bar AABA form and non-traditional song forms.
    Prerequisite(s): AFR 224  and AFR 225 .

  • AFR 331 - Jazz Arranging

    The American art form known as Jazz has produced many dynamic and influential arrangers who transcend musical genres. This course will explore the arranging styles of artists including Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Wayne Shorter. Lectures will include audio and video examples for analytical perspective on the arrangers and their individual harmonic tendencies. In addition, there will be discussion involving the arranging process and technique (i.e., small and large ensembles).

  • APC 410 - Vocal Pedagogy


    2 credit(s)
    This course is an introduction to voice pedagogy. Students learn the anatomy and physiology of the voice, the mechanics of breath management, as well as the nature of sound. The scientific principles of resonance and acoustics, and how these relate to singing and the teaching of singing, are explored thoroughly. Students are required to create a “Resources in Voice Pedagogy Notebook,” in which they include assignments designed to promote awareness of the rich array of voice pedagogy publications available, a log of their own voice lessons, and observations of voice lessons from other studios. These assignments prepare the students for the discussion and comparison of teaching styles.

  • COM 314 - Composing for the Theatre

    Students learn the role of music in primarily non-musical theatre performances and compose music within the constraints imposed by theatrical considerations. Students gain knowledge of theatrical production through lecture and discussion with the instructor, Hartt theatre faculty and staff and theatre professionals. Each student gains practical experience by collaborating with a Hartt faculty director and the Hartt Recording Studio in the composing and recording a score for use in a Hartt play production.

    Introduction to traditional and contemporary music notation through the use of Finale. Course work includes the clear notation and copying of excerpts from the published literature as well as student-composed works. Simple, single-line melodies; chamber, choral, percussion, full orchestral, or band scores; as well as the creation of MIDI demonstration recordings and extraction and preparation of parts are covered in depth. Extensive use of computer workstations by students.

    Introduction to fundamentals of digital synthesis, sound editing, sampling, and aesthetic issues of electronic and computer-aided music composition. Topics include construction of timbres using sampling, editing, signal processing, various kinds of synthesis, and interactive composition. Includes introduction to ProTools, Metasynth, Unity Session, and other computer applications.

  • COM 468 - Scoring for Film, TV, and Video

    This course is for composers who are interested in writing music for film and video. Students study the technical aspects of film scoring, including synchronization, SMPTE code, click tracks, stopwatch and free timing, spotting procedures, orchestration, and music software. The aesthetics of film music are studied, and major film scores, past and present, are analyzed. In addition, there is an exploration of the business aspects of film scoring.
