English with Certification in Secondary Education, B.A.


General Education Requirements (A&S)


In addition to major requirements, students must meet the General Education Requirements that correlate to their degree.

Major GPA and Grade Requirements


Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in courses required to complete the major. All courses required for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

English Major Requirements (36 credits)


Each student should plan his or her program of study in consultation with the Secondary English advisor.

Sophomore Seminar


One Course in Grammar or History of the Language


One Course in Three of the Following Four Categories:


Adolescent Literature Course


Capstone Course


Electives


English electives at the 200 level or above, to reach a total of at least 36 credits (12 courses) to complete the major.

Note(s):


A single course may be used to satisf, two-but not three-distribution areas; for example, a course on modem British poetry might satisfy the poetry requirement and count in the 20th and 21st centuries category.

Depending on their content, Studies in…, Special Topics, and honors courses may be used to fulfill distribution requirements. Consult the department chair.

Secondary English Education Major with Urban Emphasis


The Secondary English Education Major with an Urban Emphasis is designed to prepare pre-service teachers with a program of study to prepare candidates for teaching positions in urban school settings. The integrated instruction and experiences for field work, practicum and student teaching will be in an urban setting under the supervision and guidance of clinical professionals and a trained cooperating teacher. The Urban Emphasis course work follows the same Secondary English Major sequence of professional educational courses. The Urban Emphasis requires students to select certain courses from a specific list of options to complete general education requirement and English coursework.

Additional Information


Secondary English majors must follow NCTE-suggested course areas, including courses concentrating on
the works of women writers and writers of color, courses on film, and courses on poetry.
